Roof load: how it works

The question we get most often: will this fit my car? The honest answer is that it depends on your car, not on our tent. So here, in plain language, is how roof load works, so you can check it yourself.

Two numbers, often confused

Dynamic roof load is what your roof may carry while driving. This is the figure from your vehicle documents or manual, and it's the one that matters for whether a rooftop tent works. For passenger cars it's often between 50 and 100 kg, but it really varies per model and trim.

Static roof load is what your roof can handle while parked. That's considerably more, since there are no forces from braking, steering and bumps. You sleep while parked, so this is the figure that applies. It's rarely in the documents — ask your car manufacturer or importer.

How much does a tent like this weigh?

Dune 60.5 kg · Oasis 66 kg (74 kg including accessories) · Savannah 74 kg. Your roof bars themselves add to that.

Example calculation: roof bars of 8 kg plus an Oasis of 66 kg is 74 kg your roof needs to carry while driving.

What we don't do

We never say "fits any Land Cruiser" or anything like it. Two cars of the same model can have different roof loads, depending on roof trim and build year. We don't know your car. Your vehicle documents do.
