Rent a rooftop tent: try first, buy later

The short answer

You rent an LCM Offroad Dune hardshell rooftop tent from us from €175 for a weekend or €225 for a week, with a €500 deposit. We mount it on your car for you, at pickup and at return. Pickup in Hoogwoud, the Netherlands. That way you know after one trip whether rooftop tent travel suits you, before buying one for 2,159 euros.

Look at that middle row. For €50 more than a weekend you get four extra nights. We prefer renting by the week, and you can see that in the price.

What's included in the rental?

The rooftop tent with mattress, ladder and storage bags
Mounting on your car at pickup and removal at return. We do that, because you don't lift 60.5 kilos onto your roof on your own
Instructions and a short demonstration, so you're not left puzzling on your first evening

Not included: roof bars and your own bedding.

That last one is exactly why people rent. Only after three days on the road do you know whether you enjoy sleeping on your roof every night. You only find that out on the road, not in a brochure.

Where can you rent a rooftop tent?

At our place in Hoogwoud, Gouwe 15, in West Friesland, the Netherlands. Pickup and return by appointment; we don't deliver rentals, because we mount and remove the tent on your car ourselves.

How does it work?

Call or message +31 6 28075883 with your travel dates. You'll know right away whether the tent is available
Reserve with a 25% down payment. That amount simply comes off at pickup
Check your roof load. The tent weighs 60.5 kg and your roof bars come on top. Do the free roof-load check for a first estimate; your car manufacturer's specification is leading
Arrange suitable roof bars. They're not part of the rental and must fit your car. In doubt, give us a call
Come and pick it up in Hoogwoud, Gouwe 15, by appointment. We mount the tent on your car. Bring your ID
Drive. On your return we take it off again

Rent first, buy later

Enjoyed it and buying your own tent from us afterwards? Then a substantial part of the rent you paid comes off the purchase price. So your trial trip costs you next to nothing, and you never buy a pig in a poke.

Didn't enjoy it? That's fine too. Then you know that for 225 euros instead of 2,159.

How do you return the tent?

The way you got it: swept clean inside, mattress free of sand, fabric without mud. If that doesn't work out, we charge €45 cleaning costs. That's not a penalty, that's the work we'd otherwise have to put in.

More important than clean is dry. A damp tent left folded in its shell will grow mould. Did it rain on your last day? Just say so at return and we'll open it up to dry. That costs you nothing. If you keep quiet and mould develops, we settle that with the deposit.

Where are you allowed to sleep in it?

Not everywhere. Wild camping is not allowed in the Netherlands and many other countries. Campsites, farm campsites and private spots are fine. Here's how the rules work in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

Do I have to mount the rooftop tent on my car myself?
No. We mount it at pickup and take it off at return. That's part of the rental. You don't lift 60.5 kilos onto your roof on your own.

Can I cancel free of charge?
Up to 14 days before the pickup date you can cancel free of charge. After that the 25% down payment is forfeited.

Does the rent come off the purchase price if I buy a tent afterwards?
Yes. If you buy your own rooftop tent from us after renting, a substantial part of the rent you paid comes off the purchase price.

Will the rental tent fit my car?
